Refuge Recovery is a buddhist inspired path to recovery from addictions of all kinds. It is open to people recovering from addictions to and obsession for alcohol, drugs, codependency, gambling, sex, food, technology, relationship, etc. You are welcome here. We are not opposed to anyone and Refuge Recovery can be used in addition to the wonderful gifts of 12 step program, or can be a path on its own to recovery and freedom. We are an abstinence based program.
Refuge Recovery started in Los Angeles several years ago and is growing around the the country. There is a wonderful book about it that just came out by Noah Levine, a Buddhist teacher. You can read about Refuge Recovery here: www.refugerecovery.org
We are not affiliated with Gyalwa Gyatso center, they simply have very graciously offered to allow us to use their very beautiful space for our meeting. You do NOT need to be a Buddhist to attend Refuge Recovery. All are welcome here.
The format will likely be as follows:

  • Opening introductions
  • 20 Minute Silent Meditation (very brief instructions on mindfulness meditation before the sitting begins, but not during the sitting, which will be held in silence for 20 minutes)
  • Then the first Sunday of the month, there will be a chairperson who shares for 10-15 minutes on their story and how Buddhism and/or Refuge Recovery and/or Meditation has played a role in helping them get or stay in recovery and on the path to freedom. Then group members will share in an all volunteer format (no one will be getting called on) to share for 3-5 minutes on what they heard or on a topic chosen by the speaker.

Buddhist Recovery Meeting

New Mind Meditation Buddhist Society

586 West First Street, Claremont, CA 91711   Map
(Claremont Forum)

Other info:

From Addiction to Awareness is a 12-step meditation program developed by our founder Johnathan Thomas. This is a meeting for anyone recovering from anything. Our focus is meditation in the Buddhist style, though you don’t have to be a Buddhist to do it. We just work with our minds, and see what’s what. This meeting is not affiliated with any major 12-step group, but some of our members are.
Our format is meditation, a dharma talk, and discussion. First there is a brief introduction, including a chance for participants to say their names and the addiction they are dealing with if they so choose. Then there is 20-30minute meditation period. There is no right or wrong way to meditate. People are free to meditate any way they choose. There is an opportunity to make a donation, but none is expected.
We aspire that this meeting be available to people in recovery whether they are Buddhists or not, as well as to anyone curious about meditation and how they might integrate it into their lives.

Buddhism/12Step Recovery Meeting

Day/time: Tuesday  —  7:00pm – 8:15/8:30pm

Ocean Avenue, Oxnard

500 Ocean Avenue, Oxnard, CA 93035   Map

Other info:

This meeting has been running for 1yr 4mo.
Each meeting is led by a volunteer from the group. We do not have an established teacher for this group nor are we affiliated with any Buddhist Center although a few of us attend meetings/meditation at Against the Stream in Santa Monica or attend other meditation groups.
We welcome people in all 12 Step programs. this is a small meeting, usually between 6-12 people.
Format is based on a combination of Kevin Griffins' suggestions for format and uses Noah Levine's 4 Noble Truths of Recovery.
Each month we cover one of the 12 Steps for the whole month. Every other week in that month is a concept or principle topic relating to Buddhism/meditation. Meetings start out with a 20 minute meditation. Choice of meditation is up to leader. Sometimes it is a silent meditation, or guided meditation if there is the need. There is a 5-7 minute break where we observe the silence but share in tea and sometimes snacks. After the break, the volunteer leader of the evening reads or we listen to a C.D recording of a dharma talk. Readings are usually from 12step recovery/Buddhism books and chosen by the leader of the evening. After reading there is a discussion. We end the meeting with a Lovingkindness Prayer and the Higher Power version of the Serenity Prayer.

There is time for discussion about meditation practice and each month a recovery/dharma theme will be discussed.
To support the event and meet like-minded people, we encourage you to arrive early and/or stay after to help us with a few simple tasks. The first four people to sign up to volunteer will have their event registration fee waived!
