This hour long lunch time group is a learning group using the book Eight Step Recovery.  We will meditate for 20 minutes, read for 5-10 minutes and share for 30 minutes. All are welcome, not just those with a drug or alcohol related addiction. Addiction is defined as any behavior, substance-related or not, that brings temporary pleasure or relief, a behavior one craves but is unable to stop despite negative consequences. We look forward to growing our group to be a mainstay source of support on the Eastside with expansion to another group in the evening.

Mindful Recovery is a peer support group that explores the relationship between mindfulness, Buddhist teachings, and the 12-step path to recovery from addictive behavior. Our weekly meetings focus on mindfulness meditation practice and developing insight into the habitual thoughts and patterns that drive our unskillful behaviors.
The format includes silent meditation, readings from Buddhist, mindfulness, and 12-step recovery literature, and discussion and sharing.
Our group is not affiliated with any Buddhist center or 12-step recovery program, and is not a substitute for 12-step meetings or dharma study. We honor the 12-step traditions of anonymity and confidentiality.

Eight Step Recovery uses Buddhist teachings and tools to overcome addiction. The Eight Step program is a set of mindfulness teachings outlining a suggested course of action for recovery from addiction, stinking thinking, negative mental states, and compulsive and obsessive behaviors. This is a safe meeting for all including Trans/Queer/People of Color.

Eight Step Recovery is an inclusive resource and can be used in addition to any other recovery program including AA, NA, Refuge Recovery, SMART, etc. For members of AA/NA it can be an expression of the 11th step.

Next, we take turns reading aloud from the current book selection on Buddhism and recovery. Then, we do a 20 minute silent meditation. After meditating, we have an open discussion about the material we read. We close with a 5 minute meditation and dedication of our practice.
